Do You Support Your Local Farmers And Economy?

I was really shocked this summer to find that our grocery stores market imported fruits and vegetables and no longer seem to support our local farmers.
A case of strawberries grown locally was going for $3.99 while imported strawberries from 1,000 miles away–rotten as they were–were selling for $1.49 for almost twice as much.
It’s clear too these inferior strawberries were genetically engineering and they were moldy and rotting, as is most of the fruits and veggies in these “no name” stores. Even in the the overpriced “S” chains the fruit is imported, not even close to ripe.
Whatever happened to these big chains supported our local FARMERS?
This is unnacceptable. I went up to the produce manager and complained and I am informing other people about it too, because we should not be supporting these chains who have no concern for us or our wellbeing only making a buck and supporting interests of the countries they are owned by.
Do you agree we should buy from locals?

Good Local Farmers Markets?

I am looking for a good farmers market in either Kane or DuPage county. I like to buy fresh local produce when it’s available. Any recommendations, and times would be great!

If I Am Buying Food At A Farmers Market I Know It’s Local But How Do I Know If It’s Organic?

if the farm is using the word organic in their name or on any signage than ask to see their organic certification papers (by federal law they must have them with them every time they are selling their products).
if the farm is one, like mine that is not certified but used to be and still grows organically you have to talk to the farmer and know what questions to ask (ask about the farm fertility program, how pests are controlled, if they ever have been certified organic and why they no longer are certified, things like that) I have noticed that more and more not organic farmers at farmers markets when asked if they are organic now say yes, even though they are not so you have to ask more than “do you grow organically” you have to know yourself quite a bit about what makes an organic farm organic. A great way to learn is to volunteer on a certified organic farm and work side by side with the growers and ask a lot of questions.

Do I Need Permits To Sell Handmade Soaps At Local Farmers Market?

In the US, generally not. Go to the farmers market where you wish to sell and find the market manager and ask that person (you will need to talk to them anyway about getting a spot at the market). They will know the local and state rules.
