My Friend Bought One Of Those Black Lawn Jockeys From A Local Flea Market. Is This Wrong And Why?

As long as your friend is comfortable with having a racist symbol gracing his yard, Jared, no, it isn’t wrong. Those statues of lawn jockeys or of stable hands come from a time when people still thought slavery was acceptable, and that it was okay for whites to discriminate against people of color and treat them as second class citizens, or as property instead of as people. I grew up in a part of the country where those statues were common, especially among wealthy homeowners. That’s actually where I saw these things for the first time, in fact- and I went to school with some people whose parents actually had one of these statues at their house. Usually, the statue was right outside the front door, often right next to the front steps or porch, if the house had one. Some of them were wired for electric power, and the statue often held a light that looked like a lantern.
That didn’t diminish what they represented, however, which was the image of a slave greeting the master/mistress of the house when he or she returned home from business or a party, or some other event. It was customary during the time of slavery for the house slaves of a plantation to be stationed either outside ( there was almost always some type of sentry or guardian out at the outer gate of most plantations- the custom of having gated driveways comes down to us today from this time in history) or close to the doors of the plantation house when their owners were away, and for the slaves to greet and escort their owners back inside the house when they returned home. If it was dark, they were expected to carry a lantern or provide some other means of light, so that the ladies wouldn’t trip over their long dresses on their way into the house. Slaves were also expected to have or carry an umbrella or a parasol, if it was raining or the weather was bad. Most plantation owners generally had a coachman or driver, and many of them had footmen as well-and these people were normally slaves as well. The coachman looked after the horses, while the footmen unloaded and carried luggage and purchased goods into the house. Once the carriage was empty, the coachman drove it around to the stables, which were normally located some distance from the house so the flies and odors from horse manure wouldn’t disturb the occupants. It was then his job to unharness and care for the horses, and to see that the carriage and harnesses were cleaned and stored. Many plantations had their own blacksmiths- and these people too were generally slaves.
The reason these yard ornaments are frowned upon by many people is because of the legacy they bring to mind, which is the one I just described. By having one of these things in his yard, your friend is saying something about his beliefs and attitudes towards people of color, Jared. Does your friend really believe that people of color deserve to be treated as second class citizens, or as property? It seems sort of incredible that we still have people who think this way- even though we now have an African American president. It’s also more than a little sad- but hatred is like an old habit. It tends to die a hard, long, and painful death.

Are there different regulations for selling fruits and vegetables, potted perennial garden plants, shrubs, and seeds?
Or is selling at a farmers’ market pretty much of a free market, with minimal regulation?
