Good Local Produce And Artisanal Foods On Maui?

I’m headed to Maui next month and am interested in eating local seasonal food. We’re staying upcountry for a few days and in Hana for a few more. Ideally I want to find a mix of farmers markets and local stands to make food from and a few good honest restaurants that support the local farmers.
Would love to not have to eat at a big chain restaurant while there.

And also a website with cheap produce boxes for me to sell my tomatos in. Unless I should just sell them in regular small Cardboard boxes.

Have You Ever Sold Produce From Your Garden At The Local Farmers’ Market Or Flea Market?

If so, have you had to get any special licenses?
There was a time when people grew fruit trees in their yards and their kids would go door to door to sell it. Has over-regulation eliminated these opportunities? With the economy so bad and people looking for ways to make money, do you think this situation might be liberalized?

Why Does Local Produce Cost More Than Imported?

November 11, 2009 by

I thought the whole idea was for people to buy local and fresh during the summer so why are are these supermarkets pushing horrid imported produce and a fraction of the price of local? (eg. FRESH strawberries local $4.99/qt. sit rotting while imported sells for $1.49? Nothing to do with cost to grow either…just a selling ploy as local is cheaper that supermarket costs in mom/pop stores)
I think there is something seriously wrong with this approach and I for one have been buying my produce in local mom and pop shops that gets it fresh from the local markets each day.
God only knows what they put on imported goods and I’m sick and tired of hearing “recalls” and warnings of e-coli infected foods etc.
How do you get people to do the same? Don’t you think we should support local wherever possible?
I just hate that I am forced to shop at various different places because the quality sucks in supermarkets. It shouldn’t be that way.
